About Dismal Freedom Press

Dismal Freedom Press is an independent investigative newsroom serving the Central Valley and East Bay of California. We cover local government, public schools, housing, infrastructure, the environment, and the institutions that shape daily life in communities that don't always make the front page of statewide or national outlets.

Our Mission

We believe public information belongs to the public. Our mission is to pursue facts through rigorous, document-based reporting — public records requests, data analysis, court filings, and on-the-ground sourcing — and to present that work clearly, honestly, and without fear or favor.

Our Coverage Area

We are rooted in two regions of California that are often underserved by major news organizations:

• The Central Valley — with a focus on Stanislaus County (Modesto), San Joaquin County (Stockton, Manteca, Lathrop), and Sacramento County

• The East Bay — with coverage of Contra Costa County and Alameda County civic affairs

What We Do

Our reporters file California Public Records Act (CPRA) and federal FOIA requests, attend public meetings, analyze government data, and follow the money. When institutions fail to comply with public records law, we document it and report on it. When school districts, city governments, or public agencies act in ways that harm residents, we investigate.

We also publish community sentiment briefings — weekly roundups of what Central Valley and East Bay residents are talking about in local Facebook groups, Nextdoor threads, and civic forums. We treat those conversations as a primary source.

Our Independence

Dismal Freedom Press is not affiliated with any political party, campaign, government agency, or ideological organization. Our editorial decisions are made by our newsroom staff, free from advertiser or donor pressure. We maintain a strict separation between our news coverage and any revenue relationships.
